Gavin Hope

Artist: Gavin Hope
Title: For All We Know
Label: Slaight Music
Genre: Vocal Jazz

Toronto Star’s - Peter Goddard - 4 Stars; “Among the many extraordinary things about this CD – the top solo debut this year so far – is hearing a singer find himself. What really puts the CD in the big leagues is Hope’s take on “But Beautiful”.

I turned Gavin on to the seminal duo recording Tony Bennett/Bill Evan’s recorded some thirty-eight years back and reminded the bar had been set high – let’s make a play for it. The process was exhilarating and the results now public. For All We Know is for me one of the grand experiences of my professional music life. Finally, a big big hug and thank you to Shakura S’Aida for introducing us to the amazing Selena Evangeline. Another voice from beyond! Her debut duet on Lizz Wright’s ‘Salt’ completes the aural journey.

Judy Garland and ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Join National Recording Registry

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical comedy-drama fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and the most well-known and commercially successful adaptation based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.[3] The film stars Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. The co-stars are Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton, with Charley Grapewin, Pat Walshe and Clara Blandick, Terry the dog (billed as Toto), and the Singer Midgets as the Munchkins.[4]

Notable for its use of Technicolor, fantasy storytelling, musical score, and unusual characters, over the years it has become an icon of American popular culture. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but lost to Gone with the Wind. It did win in two other categories, including Best Original Song for "Over the Rainbow" and Best Original Score by Herbert Stothart. However, the film was a box office disappointment on its initial release, earning only $3,017,000 on a $2,777,000 budget, despite receiving largely positive reviews. It was MGM's most expensive production at that time, and did not completely recoup the studio's investment and turn a profit until theatrical re-releases starting in 1949.

You would be hard-pressed to find many playlists that include Judy Garland’s single “Over the Rainbow” and N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton.” But they share a place among the 25 albums and broadcasts added this week to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry, which collects titles because of their “cultural, artistic and historical importance to American society.”

Ms. Garland’s single, from the 1939 classic movie musical “The Wizard of Oz,” was a breakout hit for her and one of the most enduring ballads by the composer Harold Arlen. If that song shares anything with “Straight Outta Compton,” it is their status as landmark works in their genres.

The 1988 album, a definitive West Coast rap declaration with a powerful sociopolitical message, counts Dr. Dre among its producers, with collaborators including Ice Cube, Eazy-E and DJ Yella. (The audio clip below contains explicit language.)

The diverse list of inductees also includes the original cast recording of the 1975 musical “The Wiz”; David Bowie’s 1972 album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars”; and Harry Richman’s 1929 single of the Irving Berlin earworm “Puttin’ on the Ritz.”

One of Barbra Streisand’s signature songs — the 1964 hit “People,” from Jule Styne and the lyricist Bob Merrill’s musical “Funny Girl” — is also among the registry’s new additions. “This is the prestigious treasure house in which American art is archived and acknowledged as part of the flow of our nation’s culture,” Ms. Streisand said in a statement.

“I believe ‘People’ touched our common desire to relate to others with love and caring, and I’ve always tried to express this in my renditions of this magical song.” Nonmusical recordings include the first episode of NPR’s news program “All Things Considered,” in 1971, and the last game of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in 1957, announced by Vin Scully.

These additions bring the National Recording Registry’s total to 475 titles since the National Recording Preservation Act was established in 2000. The full list is at the registry’s website.

Band Bio
Born in Brisbane, founded in the gutters of Bangkok, and now jamming in Melbourne, Miles Recommends is the independent Australian singer-songwriting and music production duo of Des Atkinson and Lou Cadell

Miles Recommends draws from, and blends together, a wide range of indie/alternate pop, rock, folk, country and blues influences; layering guitars, piano, organ, drums, French horn, strings and harmonies as a backdrop to our dissection of social norms.

In a life full of contradictions, Miles Recommends likes to ponder some of the bigger questions.

Our influences include: The Eels, Fleetwood Mac, The White Stripes, Jack Johnson, Laura Branigan, The Doors, Muse, Josh Rouse, Johnny Cash, The Mountain Goats, Richard Ashcroft, The Mamas & The Papas, OK Go, The Beautiful Girls, Bob Dylan, Boni Tyler, and Bright Eyes.

But who is Miles? A long, long time ago, people ventured into video stores for the latest and greatest films. Back then it wasn’t uncommon for those working in these stores to make suggestions to those who weren’t looking for the ordinary.

Though we never knew him outside of those four walls, a guy named Miles was our go-to dude for recommending what we should take home and we’ll be darned if he didn’t always choose things that made us happy!

Miles Recommends records, mixes, produces and releases their music under their independent production label Flapjack Industry Records.

Miles Recommends' debut EP 'Extended Play' was released on February 5, 2017, which is currently enjoying airplay for singles 'Crazy House' and 'Darkness' across Australian radio stations.

About EP Tracks

1. Crazy House (alternative/indie rock): A cry for sanity in a life ruled by traditionalist masters and the inane desires of their subjects. Blistering piano and haunting harmonies awaken this Frankenstein-bastard as it drunkenly churns and waltzes through to a climax and post-mortem that questions a life lived within rank and file.

2. Burn Through (indie pop): Heartfelt defiance wrapped in the steadfast yet gentle embraces of acoustic guitar, piano,  French horn and cello, Burn Through stakes a claim on the road less travelled whilst maintaining an urgent call for eternal vigilance.

3. Darkness (alternative/indie rock): A greasy web of pounding drums, plastic bass, winding organ and striking piano ensnare and carry the folksy introduction of Darkness off into a hurricane of desperate and depressive rage.

4. Just Wanted You (indie folk/pop): With a milky warm lead vocal subtly accompanied by acoustic guitar and stripped-backed piano, Just Wanted You may sound like just another love song. And yet. Despite its hopeful sound, this exploration of youthful romance remains distracted by the trivialities of popular culture.

5.  Lonely People (indie pop): A bright and peppy party song about conspicuous consumption, navel-gazing and hyper-globalisation?! Lonely People has all the boppy clapping, chanting, and toe-tapping you could possibly want.  Just try not to sing along with this ironically catchy number!
