The Rhythm Express

promo packshot
Artist: The Rhythm Express
Title: Jolene ft Maiko Watson
Label: 7 Arts/Side Door Records
Genre(s): Americana / Reggae / Country

“This is great...love the arrangement and Maiko’s vocals. We will add to Fresh Air.” Sandy Mowat – Producer Fresh Air CBC National Radio Canada

“Excellent version.” Kerry Doole – FYI Music News

A few months back I was turned on to a haunting YouTube clip of Dolly Parton singing her most recorded song, “Jolene”. The original 1973 track had been slowed from single format to long playing 33 1/3 speed. That listening experience was both eerie and a revelation. No doubt, Dolly Parton possesses a grand set of pipes. Slowed down it becomes more evident, in that every inflection, bend in a vowel, a word is extraordinary and rocked with emotion.

With that in mind and captivated by the change of tempo, I began hearing other possibilities. What if this was done with a reggae feel - early Bob Marley and Wailer’s rhythm section style and backing vocals reminiscent Marley’s backup singers, the I-Threes. Acutely aware Parton and a cappella sing group Pentatonix just won a Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Award with an updated version of ‘Jolene’; the song’s alluring story, sumptuous melody and sweeping beauty was more than the Rhythm Express could resist. In fact, we decided to keep the song’s country charm with a guest appearance from guitarist Tim Boviconti of Ron Sexsmith/ Burton Cummings fame. Tim’s lap steel, acoustic and electric guitar keeps our ‘Jolene’ rooted in tradition.

Great songs lend themselves to all sorts of interpretation. ‘Jolene’ rocks our world.

Enjoy

Battle of Santiago

Artist: Battle of Santiago
Title: La Migra
Label: Made With Pencil Crayons
Genre(s): Afro-Cuban / Canadian post-rock / Dub
Release Date: April 28 2017

NOISEY FEATURE: http://bit.ly/2o3vDtf

“art-rock, dub, electronica and Afro Cuban jazz into a dense and worldly mix.”
Jim Farber New York Daily News, New York, NY

“The Battle of Santiago" deliver it all. Ancient knowledge, great dance beats, and musicianship. What a great act!”
Ismael Ahmed, Host of “This Island Earth”, WDET, Detroit, MI

A more timely album title would be hard to find: Battle of Santiago’s third release, La Migra, literally translates to “deportation police,’ certainly a topic of great discussion in North America as of late. Tapping in to the climate wasn’t a purposeful decision – the album title was chosen before the change of administration – but the emotion behind the sentiment is still the same. “We chose this title last year, simply because all of the band members have had to migrate to Toronto for one reason or another. We often have trouble crossing the border because of our diverse heritage, something we expect to be even more difficult in the coming months.”

The Battle of Santiago (BOS) band members are half Canadian, half Cuban, resulting in a unique and formidable sound. Led by Michael Owen (bass and production) the band’s sound never veers far from their distinctive blend of Canadian art rock and afro-Cuban jazz – twisted through a dub lense.

Label: Slaight Music
Genre: Vocal Jazz

Beautiful album! max radio support
Radio Monte Carlo / RMC2 Radio - Italy

Toronto Star’s - Peter Goddard - 4 Stars; “Among the many extraordinary things about this CD – the top solo debut this year so far – is hearing a singer find himself. What really puts the CD in the big leagues is Hope’s take on “But Beautiful”.

Gavin and I started this journey at Lula Lounge at a fundraiser for Sing! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival. Preceding that occasion Id’ never heard this glorious voice only in harmony with singing group The Nylons on the Ted Woloshyn Show @ Newstalk 1010 in 2012.

What transpired on stage was pure magic! This was Marvin, Luther, James Imgram, Pebo Bryson, all in one body. I knew then I had to secure studio time. That we did and two demo tracks landed on Slaight Music’s founder Gary Slaight (President and Chief Executive Officer of Slaight Communications Inc.) and Derrick Ross (President of Slaight Music) desk. A brief meeting ensued and deal struck.

I turned Gavin on to the seminal duo recording Tony Bennett/Bill Evan’s recorded some thirty-eight years back and reminded the bar had been set high – let’s make a play for it. The process was exhilarating and the results now public. For All We Know is for me one of the grand experiences of my professional music life. Finally, a big big hug and thank you to Shakura S’Aida for introducing us to the amazing Selena Evangeline. Another voice from beyond! Her debut duet on Lizz Wright’s ‘Salt’ completes the aural journey.

Gavin Hope - Vocals
Selena Evangeline – vocal duet (Salt)
Bill King – Produced and arranged - Steinway acoustic grand piano and Hammond B-3 organ
Engineered and Mixed by Michael Haas

Title: Bobbi Champagne

Genre(s): Funky Soul R&B / Blues

“This is what a sunset bonfire on the beach must feel like” Cyrus Pavel - Indie Shuffle

Written the day after I literally fell into a bonfire at a cottage party hanging with some friends. The song is actually named after a real person (a bartender) that I met at a gig. When I asked what her name was she replied "I'm Bobbi Champagne” and I thought it was dope. Her name was so unique that I asked her if he could use it in a song and she obliged. Hence the chorus of the song was born from the these two single real life events.

Greta Gaines

promo packshot
Artist: Greta Gaines
Title: Tumbleweed
Label: Big Air Records
Genres: Americana / Folk / AAA
Release: June 2017

Greta Gaines releases her stunning new 7-song LP “Tumbleweed” featuring the title track as the first single.

For Greta Gaines, adventurer, songwriter, extreme sports trailblazer, activist, mother, mentor, TV commentator and producer, composer and dreamer, making records seemed to be out of her system after the critically lauded Lighthouse & the Impossible Love. With so much to do, two boys to raise and a high profile role in the legalize cannabis world as an advisory board member of NORML and a face of Women Grow, she’d made an album of elegance and great songcraft – and was satisfied with a musical output that includes 1999’s alt-leaning self-titled debut, 2004’s Triple A standard It Was Hot and 2006’s Can’t Kill the Flavor, followed by the hard roots/Americana Whiskey Thoughts. And then the election happened.

As the first Women’s World Extreme Snowboard Champion recalls, “I was feeling like I was going mad right before the election, like maybe truly getting ready to lose my marbles. I was walking in the woods with my dog, and I kind of heard angelic voices saying, ‘Begin again…’

“The lyrics (to ‘Begin Again’) poured out… That was the inspiration I needed to let the flood gates open, to sit down and write all day and all night until the muses stopped speaking to me. A deep sense of agitation started the process, and it didn’t stop until the record was recorded, mixed and mastered – all within a few months.”

Those seven songs mark some of Gaines’ most collected and evocative work. Pieces of Neil Young, traditional story songs, ‘60s girl groups through Nico’s sangfroid, world weary cowboy feels, mahogany vocals, bits of the Cowboy Junkies, Concrete Blond’s Johnette Napolitano, Laurel Canyon country, buoyantly jubilant garage rock all co-mingle on Tumbleweed in a heady mix of urgency and triumph.

“Tumbleweed has reinvigorated me into believing I will always want to write and record music. I didn’t want to fix or autotune anything. I’m finally a confident enough singer to let it all hang out as raw as possible.”

Pat LaBarbera

Artist: Pat LaBarbera
Title: Deep In A Dream
Label: Radioland
Release: 1999 Reissue
Note: It was only released on CD in Canada

Winner Best Jazz Album - Juno Awards 2000

AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

Pat LaBarbera has long been known as a hard-driving tenor saxophonist who is able to play consistently exciting solos. Deep in a Dream is a change of pace for LaBarbera sticks exclusively to ballads, including quite a few that are obscure. Backed by pianist Don Thompson, bassist Neil Swainson, and his brother drummer Joe LaBarbera, Pat shows the influence of John Coltrane (circa 1957-1958) in his tenor playing while sounding more original on soprano. On either horn, his solos are beautiful as he caresses the rare melodies and makes every note count. This is an underrated and very rewarding set.

Personnel: Pat LaBarbera (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Don Thompson (piano); Neil Swainson (bass) Joe LaBarbera (drums).

Recording information: D.A.V.E. Audio, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (09/22/1998-09/23/1998).

Title: Madness” EP
Label: M Ocean Records
Genre: D&B
Release Date: 21st May 2017

DJ Hype - “Will support on my Kiss show”

DNBHQ – “Will play Madness on the Drum and Bass show on Pyro Radio”

DJ Aphrodite – “Great Release))”

DJ Mag - “Pat Fulgoni always gives that chilling vibes that I love! Good choice indeed.”

First track off the EP “Madness” drops in deep as the ocean slowly rolling waves of beats on a quiet day floats a huge melody spreading across a high production pitch-kick selection of liquid scything bass and velvety undercurrents of tech nodules across a deep ethereal soundscape, DnB vocal specialist Pat Fulgoni puts you under a spell with a spaced out heart felt vocal delivery explaining that what we are looking for is indeed Madness, all the elements wed together via a dreamy, weaving DNB aesthetic.

“Turn Up” feat. Jamaican Dancehall favourite Konshens, is an amped up high vigour powerhouse from the cut-up wasp’s nest of thrashing bass on the first drop to the perfectly weighted featherlight snares, fine-grained synths and oceans of space creating a whipping pace that never feels busy.

Driving a steam train of pure energy through the original “Madness” brings the drama of trumpet techy instrumentals that roll out into a powerful drumscape of snares over a tightly filtered bass line from DJ and producers K-i & Phuture Dee who wastes no time letting you know what time it is, to get on down to the floor! Amongst the breakdown and killer second drop makes this track a real hidden chest of treasure!

Last but not least “Turn Up” a weighty remix from label mate Loggi whose firing on all cylinders for this one, with an array of twisted liquid beats a sci-fi tech scudder suddenly emerges halfway through chomping at the ready, making way for a jungle amen adding a fierce fire in the mix.
