Billboard's Friday Pick Hits

Krewella: “We Go Down” [Columbia Records]
Summer’s almost over, but vocal-fronted electronica trio Krewella sound like they’re ready to close the sticky season with a bang. Or with a banger, courtesy of their new single “We Go Down.” Sisters Jahan and Yasmine Youhaf sing over producer Rain Man’s beats, meshing reggae-inspired rhythms with high-frequency drum and bass. The end result hits hard, with the sort of pop-inflected song structure and heavier drop that have gleaned such sudden success for the group over the last year. The Chicago three-piece are about to tour extensively around North America, kicking off proceedings at Electric Zoo in New York this weekend, and wrapping up in November in their hometown. If you’re bummed about the long days and balmy nights winding down, just turn this up a little louder.

Macklemore + Ryan Lewis - Can't Hold Us (Big Gigantic Remix) [free download]
I admittedly don't listen to much non-dance music, but this summer it has been impossible to ignore the massiveness of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' anthem "Can't Hold Us." Until Big Gigantic uploaded its take to SoundCloud earlier this week, I couldn't find a dancefloor-friendly version of the track that fit my tastes. But I'm glad they gave us their take: this remix preserves the original qualities of the song while amplifying the percussion and drums to make it more of a banger. Oh, it's also a free download. And you know a thrift shop-lover can't ever argue with free.

Vice feat. Mike Taylor: "World Is Our Playground"
L.A. native DJ Vice is one of the best open-format DJs in the world. The 20-year veteran started playing hip-hop records on LA’s Power 106 in the late 90s before securing DJ residencies at Las Vegas nightclubs like Lavo, TAO and Marquee. Over the last few years, Vice has been working on his production chops -- remixing tracks for Dev, Yuna, Rita Ora, Tegan & Sara and Capital Cities. His latest original track, "World Is Our Playground" looks to be a breakthrough hit. The progressive house track features Mike Taylor's catchy vocal paired with Vice's beautiful piano riff and a high-energy buildup. As a DJ who's played some of the most prestigious parties around the world, the song is a perfect fit for Vice.
-Eric Coomes @EricCoomes

Sir Sly: “Miracle” [Cherrytree/Interscope]
“I just want what can’t have,” Sir Sly’s Landon Jacobs croons over a guitartronica beat. But we can have what we want as the Los Angeles-based trio has made this track available as a free download. And you’ll want to cop it if for no other reason than the waning days of summer should be soundtracked by exactly this kind of chillwave. Touches of sadness throughout never veer towards despondent and the gentle synth strumming will induce some swaying if not verified toe-tapping.

RG's All Nite Funk Band - Thousand Shadows - Rides the Global Charts

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rgsallnitefunkband

Album Notes
RG's All Nite Funk Band was a Motown Vision under the Guidance of the late Gwen Gordy Fuqua, one of the founding family Members of The Motown Sound. This song soon became an AirPlay Hit in the late 80's world wide, but Corporate walls and Gwen Gordy's remarkable talent for the Future of Motown conflicted. Some Said: The Band and Song were ahead of their time and this may have been their down fall. Their sound blended with a Fleetwood Mac flavor, and a Soulful Vocal & a little Pop feel with an R&B Bottom was unique.

But Motown & their Radio Stations thought it was too risky to press vinyl and just let The Record fade away. Todays music has been going in various directions, so we revamped the Song . With the warmth of Real Strings and the Exciting new Vocals accented by Flaming Rock Gutiar Runs, we created a building dance Groove (6:18) that sweeps you in and away.
This is a very inspiring message type song, that Motivates one's inner self, but the Real message from this Song is aimed at having faith in your self & and Dreams do come True.

Our story has now developed into a Mystery and now a Search, for our singer Diane Anderson who just Vanished after recording this song. And just a few days prior to her signing a huge Record Contract with Motown Records? This was her last Performance and she has been missing since the late 80"s, her family & friends have been looking for years but no contact at all. We hope that this Record may help find her alive, or help bring closure to her family who need to know something? If your know of her where abouts or any info on her please contact us immediately . Adam Lambert Leaves RCA Over 'Creative Differences'

Singer says label was pushing for an Eighties cover album

By
Miriam Coleman

Adam Lambert is leaving record label RCA over creative differences regarding the direction of his next album. In a letter to The Hollywood Reporter, Lambert explained that he decided to make the break after being asked by the label to record an album of covers.

"The label is 'pushing for an (Eighties) covers album,' and feels that this is the only kind of release they are prepared to support," the American Idol Season Eight finalist said in the letter. "While there are lots of great songs from that decade, my heart is simply not in doing a covers album."

The Best Albums of 2012 Mid-Year Report: Adam Lambert, 'Trespassing'

Lambert went on to praise RCA, who released his 2009 debut album, For Your Entertainment, as well as 2012's Trespassing, a live collection and several EPs. "Over the past four years, I have been truly fortunate to work with an amazing roster of producers, writers and engineers," he said. "Thanks to them, I have grown as both a songwriter and a vocalist. Artistically and professionally, I think it is essential that I continue with this evolution."

In contrast to the covers idea, Lambert said that he is "already deep into" writing new material for his next album. "I can't tell you how excited I am to share this new sound and direction," he wrote. "This music is where my heart is, and I believe that is what my fans want to hear. So after careful consideration, I have made the decision to respectfully part ways with RCA."

Lambert also just signed on to join the cast of Glee for the show's fifth season.

The Readers are saying:

Exactly where did I say that I had forgotten him? I like him well enough. I just don't worship the ground he walks on like so many on these message boards do. I do think most people have already forgotten him though. His last record only sold a small fraction of what his first one did. If the majority of the public hasn't forgotten him then they clearly don't care enough about him to support and buy his music any more.

Dolly Parton Signs With INgrooves for Worldwide Digital Distribution -Revisited: INgrooves, a digital distribution company, is fast becoming a favorite of music acts embarking on comebacks.

Dolly Parton Signs With INgrooves for Worldwide Digital Distribution of New Album

MEMPHIS TN (IFS) -- Re-cap of the Dolly Parton digital distribution deal for her first digital album in 2008.  This was revolutionary for its time.  Today, we take all this for "normal".  At one time, a major artist that dumped the chains of "shipping" and moved the whole recording industry to "downloads".

It was reported that Dolly Records, only imprinted just under three thousand (3,000) units for display and specialty shops.

After the dust had cleared and four (4) years later, Ms. Parton has managed an approximate downloads approaching 15 Million units of this CD.

The first release from Dolly Records will be "Backwoods Barbie", DOLLY'S first mainstream country album in over 17 years.   Dolly Parton's signing with INgrooves is representative of a larger shift underway in the music industry; artists are increasingly looking to create innovative structures that maximize their freedom, connection with fans, and sales. "Well it aint no surprise that the music industry is changing in a big way -- and trust me, I know big. When we started Dolly Records we knew we had to be cutting edge as well as put out great music," commented Dolly. "After looking at the choices in digital distribution, INgrooves was the perfect
partner for our first release. They had tons of experience and were flexible enough to work with a crazy country girl like me and I know we'll have a ball making waves in the digital world."

INgrooves has had a lot of recent success in the country market with 2007 releases from Tracy Lawrence (#1 country single with "Find Out Who Your Friends Are") and newcomer Rissi Palmer (Top Ten Country Dance Song -- Club Connection).

"All of us at INgrooves are deeply appreciative of the opportunity to work with an iconic, legendary artist like Dolly Parton", commented INgrooves' CEO, Robb McDaniels. "Ms. Parton continues to transcend musical boundaries and delivers a fantastic new album that will increasingly resonate with each track

INgrooves, a digital distribution company, is fast becoming a favorite of music acts embarking on comebacks.

Last year, San Francisco-based INgrooves oversaw digital distribution and marketing for the release of Dolly Parton's album "Backwoods Barbie." The record debuted as the No. 1 country album on iTunes. This spring, when the spoof metal group Spinal Tap releases its first album since 1992, the boys in the band are trusting INgrooves to distribute the material to iTunes, Amazon, and other online retailers.

But just don't call the privately held INgrooves a music label. "I don't like the label... label," quipped Robb McDaniels, the company's CEO.

McDaniels says INgrooves is a service company that acts much like an indie record company, such as IODA or The Orchard, but has no wish to compete against record labels. And in fact, one of the 7-year-old company's most important clients is Universal Music Group, the largest of the top four recording companies. Universal last year invested in INgrooves.

McDaniels recently spoke with CNET News to discuss where digital distribution was headed.

Q: Do you consider yourself a label?
McDaniels: I don't like the label...label. We provide some services that an artist would expect from a label. We provide some services that an independent label would expect from a major label. I think we are as good as anyone out there in terms of digital distribution and marketing.

So, if I'm a label or artist, I hire you to do what?
McDaniels: We're agnostic to whether you're a label, artist, production company; really we work for anybody that controls the rights to media, images, video, and of course audio.

We provide sort of a menu of services that you can pick and choose from. It starts with distribution and it's really the entire supply chain process for content managers. What we've built is more of an asset management system rather than just a distribution infrastructure.

Tell me about what you're doing for Nokia.
McDaniels: This is an extension of our deal with Nokia for their online stores. Comes With Music is their new initiative based out of the United Kingdom but I understand it's about to launch in the U.S. and a few other territories. It's another retail outlet for us. It's another way to reach the consumer and a great outlet for our independent music. We sort of approach the retail model in much the same way we approach the client model. We're agnostic to the manner to in which music fans consume music.

Spotify is one of your distribution partners. That's the site everybody is talking about in Europe right?
McDaniels: We've just signed Spotify. There certainly has to be a music solution out there that's getting all the buzz. In the seven years we've been doing this I can't tell you the number of times that one of my employees has come into my office and told me this is going to change the way we consume music or this is going to spell the end of us. Snocap was one at one point. Spotify is certainly getting all the buzz now. It's a streaming-based model that allows music fans to effectively access millions of songs and share playlists and I think their music interface is catching on with fans.

I think what's really happening is consumer behavior patterns are changing. It used to be when we're moving from the CD to the digital download everybody was saying that music fans still want to hold something, hold the physical good in their hand and that's why CD sales would stay strong. Now consumer behavior is moving more towards digital downloads and everybody is saying everybody wants to own the download and they want to carry it with them wherever they go and streaming models aren't going to take off. Well now the consumer is saying I don't need to own the download. I'm happy with a cloud model where all my media is housed somewhere in an Internet locker for me and I can access it at any time. One of the reasons that consumer behavior is changing is because streaming is becoming more portable and interoperable.

I can access that music for more devices and more places and so it's becoming more convenient. I think that Spotify is hitting the market at the right time. I don't know it's that novel of an idea but I think it's got great timing and great user functionality.

Tell me what artists you work with and give me an example of what you do for them.
McDaniels: We provide services to Universal Music Group, K-Tell and VP Records as well as successful artists that are going out on their own: people like Dolly Parton and Too Short. We did Dolly Parton's last release worldwide digital. Dolly formed her own label called Dolly Records and was looking for a digital partner for distribution and digital marketing. We signed her to an agreement and she opted into our worldwide digital distribution and our strategic marketing services. Our marketing group did an analysis of which retail partners would be the best ones, would do exclusives on the Dolly album, "Backwoods Barbie." We then set about executing the marketing plan leading up to the release and then pushed it out to all of our online and mobile outlets on the day of the release. It was Dolly's highest Billboard debut ever. We did very well digitally for her. The album has gone on to sell over 130,000 copies.

Who else have you done that for?
McDaniels: Artists we've worked for directly are Too Short, Tila Tequila, Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle Records, Thievery Corporation, and the Crystal Method.

What are you doing for Universal?
McDaniels: About a year ago they made a strategic investment in us and we are providing them with digital distribution services. They looked at our software platform and they felt that it would be the right thing for the delivery of their content in North America. What our system does is handle the Universal Music Group Distribution labels and we deliver all their content under their contracts in all of North American retailers.

You're doing only UMGD. Why aren't you doing delivery for all of its labels, such as Geffen?
McDaniels: Universal is obviously a very big client for us. They have a large catalog. The digital logistics business is very complex. Nobody really other than the people involved understands the complexities involved. To take on that large of a catalog with all the intricacies of distributing out to dozens if not hundreds of different retailers is a large undertaking so we decided to stage the migration of their catalog to our system.

What is your relationship like with retailers and services such as YouTube?
McDaniels: We deliver content into YouTube, audio and video, for INgrooves clients. We sit in the middle. We're like a clearinghouse between content owners, typically labels or artists, and online and mobile retailers. We're like the Visa of media. We receive back from all of the retail channels all of the sale statements and process all of the paybacks to the content owners. We see all of the sales data, all of the content. We know who's buying what, where, when and how much.

Jana Mashonee

There is no question about it. Jana Mashonee has a voice. Maybe even the voice. One listen to her performance on her newest recording, Stay With Me Baby, will tell you that.

First signed to Curb Records, her single, Ooh, Baby, Baby was picked as Billboard’s single of the week and went on to become a radio and sales success. More than Life followed, selling over a million copies on its own and as part of numerous compilation albums. A controversial version of Led Zeppelin’s epic, Stairway to Heaven, came next, earning her the honor of being the first Native American to top the Billboard dance charts.

Exploring her cultural roots, Jana then released American Indian Story, a brilliant concept album that garnered her a second GRAMMY nomination. The video for the single, The Enlightened Time, won awards at major film festivals around the world as well as a NAMMY for Best Short Form Music Video. Music from the album is featured on the Discovery Channel’s new hit series, Flying Wild Alaska.

Her first book, American Indian Story – The Adventures of Sha’kona, based on the GRAMMY nominated album of the same was also recently completed. The fantasy filled mystery-adventure is the uplifting story of the young heroine, Sha’kona, and her journey of self-discovery and courage. Fans and critics alike have praised this young adult novel for its characters, magic and message.

Jana continued to pay tribute to her heritage with the exquisite, American Indian Christmas, an extraordinary work featuring ten classic Christmas songs sung in ten different Native American languages accompanied by a full orchestra and traditional Native American instruments. A critical and commercial success beyond her wildest imagination, the album won her another NAMMY award. On December 16, 2011 she featured some of these songs in an emotional and intimate performance at the world-renowned Carnegie Hall in New York.

New Moon Born took Jana in a new direction. A soul-stirring collection, steeped in R&B and gospel roots, which brought her back into the mainstream spotlight. She debuted the featured track, an emotional cover of Sam Cooke’s classic, A Change Is Gonna Come, at the American Indian Inaugural Ball for President Obama. This was her second performance for a First Family. A year earlier she sang at the First Lady’s Luncheon for Laura Bush. The song went on to win her an eighth Native American Music Award for Song of the Year and the video took the Best Music Video prizes at the prestigious Indie Film Festival and at the American Indian Film Festival.

With all she has going on and with a tour schedule that has brought her to forty nine of the fifty states as well as overseas, Jana has still found time to give back. Her Jana’s Kids Foundation has been helping Native youth achieve their dreams through its programs and scholarship offerings for almost as long as she has been an artist. In recognition of her efforts, Jana was named 2011 Woman of the Year for her philanthropic work.

Jana’s even taken a stab at acting. In February 2012, Jana’s new movie in which she stars in, Raptor Ranch, will be debuting at the Berlin Film Festival.

Those are the facts, but to find out who Jana Mashonee really is, give a listen to Stay With Me Baby. That will explain better than any words could ever hope to.
